Also, due to playing location constraints, I've been limited on what and when I can actually RP. Mostly just been working on my various Warhammer, Warcry, and Kill Team models and terrain.

Did have a random thought the other day though, pertaining to the the Thief's Open Locks skill:

RAW it takes a Thief 1d10 rounds to make an open lock attempt. I think I'm going to start allowing thieves in my games to choose to speed up the process by risking their tools, requiring an item saving throw vs Crushing Blow to get the job done in one round. If the save is passed, they can make the Open Locks roll as normal. If the save is failed, the pick breaks and it counts as a failed attempt to open the lock.
2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-59470016026006502662021-08-08T01:25:00.003-04:002021-08-08T01:25:51.539-04:00Anti-Paladin
Still finding it hard to breathe, but here is some content to hold people over.

Anti-Paladin

Requirements: Str 12+, Con 9+, Wis 13+, Cha 17+

Prime: Str, Con

Races: Human(U)

Alignment: CE only

- The Anti-Paladin is Immune to Fear

- The Anti-Paladin receives a +2 bonus to Saves.

- The Anti-Paladin possesses an Aura of Fear. All those entering it, must make a Save vs RSW or be affected as per the Fear Spell. The save is penalized by 1 pt for each mutation the Anti-Paladin Possesses.

- The Anti-Paladin starts the game with a single mutation. If mutations are rolled for, the Anti-Paladin gets to roll twice and the player can pick the better result. Additional mutations can be gained during play as a reward from his patron for major accomplishments.

- The Anti-Paladin gains a corrosive touch 1/day. Objects touched should make an item save vs. acid or be corroded and destroyed. Liquids should foul and turn poisonous. Living creatures should be afflicted by a weak poison of some kind(determined by DM, but type K or P would be appropriate).

- At 4th level, the Anti-Paladin may quest for a demonic companion.

- At 9th level, an Anti-Paladin with a Stronghold attracts a body of fighting men exactly like a Fighter, but all the men attracted are of CE alignment.

- At 9th level, the Anti-Paladin gains the ability to cast spells, just like a paladin. His spheres of access are Combat, Healing(reversed), Necromantic, and Sun(reversed).

The limitations of a Anti-Paladin include:

- The Anti-Paladin must sacrifice a number of living creatures to his patron each month. This can be HD per level or even a percentage of his XP in HP depending on what is appropriate. This is why a lot of Anti-Paladin take up lives as slavers.

- The Anti-Paladin may never turn down a direct challenge. By and large, as long as the blood and souls flow, the demonic powers he serves don't give a rat's ass about him. They do however expect their champions to be the strongest(as they rule through strength and intimidation), and as such, they may never turn down a formal challenge. The Anti-paladin is totally allowed to use any dirty, underhanded tricks he wants, but he has to accept the challenge.

- The Anti-Paladin must remain chaotic evil. His patrons aren't as stickler over violations as the forces of law and good are(after all, the road to the abyss is often paved with good intentions), but an Anti-Paladin who changes away from CE does lose all his non-mutation powers. His former patron is also likely to send Anti-Paladin aspirants after him to regain what goodies the character may still possess. Then again, there's a good chance the Anti-paladin's demonic companion may just pull him straight into the abyss to have a chat with his former boss.

- The resurrection survival chance is reduced as if the Anti-Paladin had a con score half(rounded down) what he actually does. His patron is loathe to give back useful souls.

2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-2214236779929700202021-07-20T11:41:00.003-04:002021-07-20T11:41:49.210-04:00Cooking Part 1: HungerFor this system I am using the Fatigue system from Combat & Tactics/Spells & Magic and the starvation system from Wilderness Survival Guide.
Every character has a Hunger Track:

- Overfed: -1 to initiative and surprise checks, as well as to saves to resist sleep effects. +1 to fatigue level.

- Well Fed: Potential Food Bonus for a period of time.

- Fed: Normal. No changes.

- Peckish: +1 to initiative and surprise checks.

- Hungry: -1 to saves vs. mental affects.

- Famished: -1 to initiative and surprise checks, as well as all saving throws. +1 to fatigue level.

A character with a normal human metabolism goes down one category every hour while awake(1 every 2 while asleep). Additionally, a player can chose to go down category at any time to give himself an automatic success at some action.

Hunger categories are regained by eating snacks and meals. A snack restores 1 level of hunger. A meal restores 1 level per size(light 1 step, avg 2 step, Hvy 3 step) but also provides immunity to hunger drain based on what was eaten.

The amount is determined by race:

- Human, Dwarf, Halfling, 1/2 Elf, 1/2 Orc: Snack: 1-2 portions. Meal: Lt: 6-7, Avg: 8-9, Hvy: 10+ portions

A ration as per that found in the PHB has 15 portions per day. This post is mostly an attempt to get myself psyched up and organized for what I want to write about for the next couple of weeks. My current goal is to start posting on a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule just to get myself back into it.

I've been going through my blog roll over the last few weeks, rereading what they have written over the years, and then clicking on their links and blog rolls and reading what those people wrote.

I'm also that idiot who plays games like Skyrim and Minecraft with mods that focus on immersive survival like Frostfall and TerraFirmaCraft.

To this end, I want to add Thirst, Hunger, Fatigue, Stress, and Temperature mechanics to my game. I also want to improve on the rules for Lighting, Culinary Proficiencies, Diseases, and Poisons, as I'm just not happy the way things currently work in AD&D 2nd edition. Hell, I wanna do a massive system overhaul of my favorite RPG system, but still keep the overall feel of the system intact.

Tuesday I'll post about the cooking system I've thought up. As this is a bit of a rant, I'll go ahead and pay the joesky tax.

Spices as Treasure(1d100 doses)

What is Found(1d30)

1-16: Salty

17-20: Bitter

21-24: Sour

25-28: Sweet

29-30: Umami

Quality & Value(1d30)

1-16: Common(1-6 cp/dose)

17-24: Uncommon(1-6 sp/dose)

25-28: Rare(1-6 gp/dose)

29-30: Very Rare(1-6 pp/dose)
2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-27456026210761300742020-11-15T18:37:00.001-05:002020-11-15T18:37:30.128-05:00DCC Cleric Without Spells
I know I'm late to the party by about 9 years to talk about Cleric's without spells, but I'm about to start running a new DCC game in a Sword and Sorcery type setting, and I really have never liked the spellcasting cleric.

Most people suggest removing the cleric altogether, but I do think there should be a class for champions/avatars of gods beyond the patron/agent system. Preferably one that has little to no spellcasting ability.

My literary basis for this type of character would be Tempus from the Thieves' World books. Game design wise I looked at numerous systems including RPG pundit's Lion & Dragon, Dominique Crouzet's Fantastic Heroes & Witchery, Green Ronin's Thieves' World and Black Company sourcebooks, AEG's Good Sourcebook, and Some Sanctum Secorum stuff.

The end result is a cleric that loses spellcasting, and divine aid. This means it just keeps Turn Unholy and Lay on Hands.

In trade for all it lost it gains Zealous Wrath and Boons.

Zealous Wrath: The cleric can enter into a state of holy mania, trading points of STA for Zeal dice each round, and gaining temporary immunity to any effect requiring a Will save. The cleric also counts as an outsider while affected by this mania. While in this state it must trade at least 1 point, but the max it can trade is equal to his PER bonus(again, min 1). These Zeal dice are based on level(same size as a Warrior's Deed die), and the cleric may spend them on the following each round:

- The cleric applies the Zeal die to attack, damage, and mighty deed rolls just as if he was a warrior. Each die applying to a different attack.

- The cleric applies the Zeal die as a bonus to a spell check for Turn Unholy, Lay on Hands, and Boons that require Spell Checks.

- The cleric applies the Zeal die to himself as healing. Any extra healing is wasted.

- The cleric uses the Zeal die as damage reduction.

The cleric can remain in this state for as long as he's willing to trade STA points, even into negative numbers. When he comes out however, if he's at 0 or lower stamina, he falls unconscious until his stamina heals enough to return him to 1 STA(1 pt/hour). Until his stamina completely recovers(1 pt/turn of rest) the cleric suffers a 1 die step penalty to all rolls, and may not enter the holy mania again unless he burns a permanent point of stamina.

Boons: I am building the deities for my campaign off of d20 cleric domains and the AEG Sourcebook 'Good'. These domains grant the followers and clerics certain, minor abilities as well as providing a framework for what counts as sins/transgressions and what kind of divine aid a cleric can reasonably expect to receive for various levels of disapproval. I'll start posting examples as I get write-ups done for the individual gods.

2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-22830348811006998342020-09-22T07:52:00.000-04:002020-09-22T07:52:09.459-04:007 DM Questions
Saw this on an FB post and thought I'd answer them here.

1) How do you handle a TPK?

Players either roll up new characters or take up one of their stable of backup characters/henchmen. Prior to 3rd level, you likely haven't lost much, and after 3rd level, you likely have a few backups floating around. If a full, everyone is dead for everyone, and it's past level 3, then it may be time to have a talk with the group about what happened and why.

2) How do you get players to do their homework?

In my 30-something years of experience as a DM, I've learned that players do not do homework. Especially American players. And that goes triple for ones under 40. This is understandable however as 'let me tell you about my campaign setting' is the DM equivalent of 'let me tell you about my 12th level Paladin' and I don't think a lot of DMs have realized this(I know I've been guilty of this). Sometimes it's unavoidable however, at which point my advice is, keep it brief. No more than a 3 question thing. Offer benefits for completion.

3) What are some good monster combos?

The MM and Role Playing common sense handle this pretty well. Beyond that, I don't worry about it. Creating 'killer combos' always rubs me the wrong way as a DM. I can literally Herd-of-Tarrasque the PCs if I want to. I'd rather create interesting locales. Players who actually explore will be rewarded with stories for them to uncover that can lead to riches and power. They just have to put their detective hats on.

4-6) How do you DM line of sight vs. line of effect? How do you handle knowledge roles and player metagame knowledge? When do you allow skill substitution during skill checks?

The rulebooks are usually pretty clear, and when they are not, common sense usually prevails. In the incredibly rare instance in which this doesn't happen, I roll a die or have players roll Luck.

7) How do you handle parties that are a combination of newbies and more experienced players?

Like any other game. I expect the old hands to show the n00blets the ropes. It's in their own best interest that the rookies don't do stupid things. Plus, I have never met a veteran player who didn't like to flex his/her knowledge and skills.
2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-12214824396403575632020-04-16T17:56:00.000-04:002020-04-16T17:56:48.838-04:00Damage Mitigation for SwashbucklersOne thing that I've always felt that D&D does poorly is lightly armored warrior types. Additionally, a major issue for tired or neophyte DMs and players is that they often allow combat to become devoid of any real drama. Strictly speaking, from an entirely gamist perspective, there's not much reason to move about, sunder, or do anything but cause direct damage once a melee type gets in range of another melee type.
To that end, I offer a potential rule addition that I think should be useful for both new and old school games. It is somewhat similar to the Shields shall be splintered rule in that it has the potential to make fights last longer(which may be a good or bad thing), but I believe that it may prove beneficial for a suitably cinematic playstyle.

Rolling With The Blow
I suggest for balance that this be made into either a feat, class/kit ability, or proficiency unless you want to encourage this to be used by everyone. A character with this ability who is not encumbered, and is in light or lighter armor may make a choice when his character is struck in melee combat. He either takes the damage or rolls with the blow. In the simplest version of rolling with the blow, the character takes no damage but "suffers" some other sort of ill effect at the DM's discretion, such as being forced to move out of his current location or losing a held/worn item. This rule can be expanded on with tables and even saving throws and hit locations that determine the type and severity of the effect.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-74191031417749276632020-03-28T18:39:00.000-04:002020-03-28T18:39:10.815-04:00Bind WoundsGetting ready to play Beyond the Wall as an online game and I'm thinking of playtesting a new rule idea.

After combat, if the character spends 1 turn(10 rounds) binding his wounds(which requires materials to do that) he recovers all HP lost during the combat. There are two downsides to this however:

He takes a -1 penalty to all rolls. This is cumulative.

Heavy exertion requires the character to make a save or suffer 1 damage. This damage may not be bound.

These penalties disappear after a full night's rest, though the damage done by reopened wounds must be healed through natural healing, the healing skill, or magic.
Someone using the healing skill might provide a bonus on the damage save.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-9065090571168986982019-11-12T01:33:00.000-05:002019-11-12T01:33:54.791-05:00The InfernalsSoooo, the beholder ended up sucking to the point where I don't even want to post pics until I paint it again. However, work has been a bit light this week and I've been able to get some work done on my Warmachine Infernals army.
I didn't like the standard paint scheme used by Privateer Press, so I've kinda been painting everything up how I like.
Finally getting some new brushes and stuff with my paycheck in a few hours. Then it's off to the FLGS to get some zombicide, battletech, and paint that nolzur's beholder. As such, here is my (currently unplaytested) attempt at creating a similar system for DCC found here.

I should mention that I am using damage by class, along with the "shields shall be splintered" and helmets negate critical hits at the cost of the helmet.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-23193212688040276722019-09-02T04:25:00.000-04:002019-09-02T04:25:00.211-04:00Been AwhileMan have things changed. Not sure how often I'll post, but hoping at least 1-2 times a week. My D&D books and computer were mostly lost, sold to survive, stolen, or destroyed, but I'm not dead yet.

I've been mostly Judging for Dungeon Crawl Classics lately, so I'll likely post stuff for that while I'm trying to get back on my feet.

I've been busy with other games and with life in general. However, as always, I like generating worlds. Today while looking up some random info on something else entirely I came across this which might be of use to anyone working on games involving hunter-gatherer cultures. 2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-69092572690824566822014-03-21T15:19:00.002-04:002014-03-21T16:06:30.650-04:00Death to the Saving Throw, Part 2
Sorry it's taken so long to post this, but I've been busy with real life stuff for the last week & a half. Some General notes:

All spells that allow saving throws are considered automatically failed unless the player takes some specific action to attempt to negate the spell's effect. For example, taking cover behind a suitably large enough pillar, or under a table may negate a spell's damaging effects from affecting the character entirely(or may automatically reduce the damage by a set amount)

Shields Shall be Splintered: direct damage spells like lightning bolt, melf's acid arrow, etc. should be subject to this rule.

Armor Shall be F%$#ed: Non-magical armor should be able to provide the benefits of a passed save(1/2 damage) if the player chooses to sacrifice the armor vs. AoE attacks like breath weapons, fireballs, & the like.

Magical Armor is Spiffy: There are a couple of ways of handling this, and I'm still testing them out. The first is that magical armor automatically reduces the damage of magical spells by 1 point of damage per die per plus that the item provides. The second option is that each plus provides 1-10% magic resistance (depending on how spiffy you want the armor to actually be).

Disbelieving Illusions: If the player has cause to believe that a given spell is an illusion, a flat intelligence check should be enough to prove it one way or another. A penalty to the roll can be applied equal to the spell level.

Individual Spell Notes:
Charm X/Domination: Automatic failed save when the spell is cast, but there's a % chance per day of the spell giving out equal to the victim's Intelligence + any magical defense pluses + # of days the spells has been active.
Entangle: Bend Bars/Lift Gates roll to be able to move 10 feet in that round.
Grease: Rather than a saving throw, a Dexterity check makes more sense.
Magic Jar: Possession of new body should automatically succeed unless certain precautions are taken(a magic helm, circlet, etc. that prevents the takeover from occurring).
Polymorph: All these spells still require a system shock roll.

I'm not much one for comic books or anything based on comics, primarily because it's always about good guys. However, prior to the crossover with batman(and the protagonist's decision to become a good guy), The Darkness is actually pretty good. The video games are also reasonably decent. While I prefer the art and voice acting for the first game, the sequel has given me . . . ideas(always dangerous).
My big thought for today about shamelessly stealing from other sources stems from this. It made me think about maybe having goblins or kobolds having slaying a house cat(a dangerous animal by 1st level character standards) as a coming of age ritual, or maybe as a requirement for skilled goblin warriors to challenge the current chieftain for leadership.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-72835203001585346832013-06-25T10:25:00.001-04:002013-06-25T10:25:07.224-04:00Option Series, aka 2.5eThe group I'm currently playing with wanted to use some of the rules from combat and tactics(and spells & magic). Can't say I'm overly enthused, but I'm giving it a go. Primarily we're just using Knockdowns and Critical Hits. Thus far it's rarely been an issue, since nobody has rolled well enough to use them, or the monsters have been effectively immune.
Having said all this, there are a few things I see right off. By and large, there are two many rolls. I think I might get rid of the save vs. PPDM used to resist the knockdown. Either that or I might just change the Knockdown from a random roll, to just the save with a modifier based on the weapon vs. size.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-20946010374025414922012-07-07T03:38:00.002-04:002012-07-07T03:38:53.920-04:00Converting Iron Heroes to 2eEvery couple of months I get it into my head that I want to play Dark Sun. I look over all the books and systems, and decide that I absolutely can't stand playing it in 2nd edition anymore because of the dependence of the system on characters acquiring magic items.
So I always end up reaching for my Iron Heroes books, which, tbh, have always looked good on paper, but then I was never really reading anything very closely, and somehow completely missed all the proto-4e stuff in the skill section.
I finally managed to somehow get through all the class conversions(Even have a workable Complete Psionics Handbook Conversion of the Psionicist to Iron Heroes which is something I've not managed to do, and have been trying to figure out since 2007 when I actually got the idea the first time), but ended up getting stuck in the skills section.
I ended up talking to a friend about how much I wish there was a way to just drop the whole bloody skill system in d20(which is a big reason as to why I left playing d20 in the first place), when my friend says, "Why not convert Dark Sun to 2e" which made me laugh for obvious reasons, but then it got me thinking . . . . why not convert the stuff I like in Iron Heroes to 2nd edition?
Get ready folks . . . AD&D 2nd edition's Iron Heroes is coming! Over the next few days, I'll start posting classes and stuff as I get them sorted out.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-80342874773667415032012-07-02T21:38:00.000-04:002012-07-02T21:38:06.606-04:00Cantrip effect ideas I recently sent the party a list of things that the Cantrip spell could do off the top of my head. Thus, it's a continuation of this article. I'm reprinting the list here so A) it doesn't get lost, and B) because I'm trying to get back into updating this blog regularly.

Possible Cantrip Effects:

+/-1 to a single check for the following types of rolls: Ability, Open Door, Encounter Reaction, Saving Throw, Initiative, or Secret/Hidden Object/Door.

+/- 5% to a single check for the following types of rolls: Thieving Skills, Hear Noise, Climbing, Bend Bars/Lift Gates, System Shock, Resurrection Survival, or Avoiding Getting Lost.

+/- 1 to the damage of another caster's spell.

+/- 5 Feet to the range or Area of Effect of another caster's spell or a single ranged attack.

+1 bonus to a Slashing or Piercing weapon's damage(by sharpening in) on their next attack attempt(effect fades whether the attack hits or misses).

Causes a Slashing or Piercing weapon to do -1 damage until it is sharpened w/ magic or whetstone(Can be used cumulatively to a max of -3, but no weapon may do less than 1 point of damage)

-1 AC bonus vs. Ranged Attacks from a range of 30' or greater.

+1 AC penalty vs. Ranged Attacks from a range of 30' or less.

+/-1 to AC vs. a single Melee attack(may not make an AC better than 7 or worse than 10).

Heal 1 hp of damage within 1 round of sustaining the injury or Stabilize one character below 0 hp(In my campaign this is the same as applying a bandage, and thus I feel this doesn't really step on the cleric's toes).

Increase/decrease a character's movement rate by 3. Can't make a character move slower than 0.

Increase/decrease the movement rate of an animal of Tiny size by half.

Cook Food/Boil Water/Chill Drink/Season Food for 1 meal.

Light a Fire.

Preserve 1 pound of inanimate matter per level of caster to a maximum of 10 pounds(herbs, food, spell components, etc).

Age 1 pound of inanimate matter per level of caster to a maximum of 10 pounds by 1 week.

Instantly clean/dirty or dry/dampen 1 character/object.(may provide a bonus/penalty on saves!)

Repel normal, non-magical insects.

Summon a single stinging/biting insect or other small creature. The creature may cause disease, be poisonous, or interrupt spellcasting w/ an attack(DM determines)

Automatically know the # of a certain object in a pile.

Will Dye or color one object or creature any color you'd like(lasts until the creature next takes a bath)

Style hair, and even cause it to grow. This is how all those dungeon-punk wizards manage to keep a perfect mohawk in a world without Hairspray or Glue.(lasts until the creature next takes a bath)

Create a seemingly magical aura around yourself or another character/object.

Cause an NPC to make a morale check.

Creates a single object of 1 pound per level of caster to a maximum of 10 pounds. The object is fragile and is obvious magical nature.

Manipulate 1 object of 1 pound per level of caster to a maximum of 10 pounds within 10'

Create a 5' radius light.

Extend/Decrease the radius of a light source by 5'.

Animate the remains of a single tiny creature(such as a songbird or mouse). The caster has to concentrate to keep the creature animated. It's movements are jerky(it can't attack or fly) and slow(half the speed it had in life).

Of course, there are a ton of other options, and I may post more of them later.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-90352640487045055252012-02-23T14:28:00.000-05:002012-02-23T14:28:25.413-05:00FINALLY!It's about bloody time Google started working again! I will have a new gaming post up asap.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-13993935242489309612012-01-12T12:18:00.001-05:002012-01-12T12:18:53.161-05:00Starting at Suck: Ideas for 1st level adventuresFor "Good" parties:

- Ripped right from Diablo: A local humanoid warband has stolen the Innkeeper's sign and think it's some sort of magical totem. The players are offered a small reward(or their bar tab is expunged) for returning it.
- Where's Waldo: The local sage has gone missing. It's known that he's gone into a certain mountain pass to look for herbs, but that was 2 weeks ago. The heroes are tasked with finding him. The area is relatively safe except for the occasional rock slide and the somewhat carnivorous wildlife.
- Poisoning Pigeons in the Park: A serial killer is loose in the PCs home turf, and his preferred method of killing his victims is by lacing their drinks with slow acting debilitating poison before dismembering them as they attempt to go home for the night. The local brewing festival is only a few weeks away, and the party has reason to believe that he's going to turn the entire festival into a giant bloodbath.
- Heart of Stone: A local sculptor has mistakenly fallen in love with a medusa via her handiwork, thinking she's an incredibly talented artist in her own right. The PCs are tasked with either revealing the truth or helping the couple find true love. (Note: The true love option can provide an interesting twist for the Medusa encounter if you're playing Return to the Keep on the Borderlands!)

For "Evil" Parties:

- Kick a man when he's down: a rival of the group has recently been hauled off to prison. Now's your chance to loot his stuff! You'll have to dodge the city guard though, who consider all the cool toys to be "evidence" in their criminal case. Alternately, now that he's virtually defenseless in prison, killing him once and for all might not be a bad idea.
- Ripped from the Warriors: You've been framed! You've been accused of killing a major underworld power in the region, and now there's a bounty on your head being paid for by people you normally associate with. If a group is smart, they will not hack and slash their way through this, but turn this into an opportunity to gain even more power and infamy in the criminal underground.

- Ripped from The Darkness: You've pissed off people you shouldn't have and now you need leverage to barter for your miserable lives. Lucky for you, your enemy's right hand man has been gathering just the kind of dirt you're after, and a little birdy told you where to look for it. Now you just have to fight a few hired mooks, and get past a few locked doors to get at that lovely chest of information and evidence.
- Free to Good Home: Every villain needs to protect his lair from do-gooders and fellow villains alike. The price for such protection is never cheap, but your sources may have finally come through for you, having managed to find out about a ghoul trapped in a slick sided stone pit. If the party can figure out how to transport the creature, get it home undetected, and perhaps even train the thing a bit, they'll have a valuable "watch dog" for their lair.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-2581603862612004692011-12-13T17:15:00.000-05:002011-12-13T17:15:20.493-05:00Sometimes TPKs are no fun At Saturday night's Midlands 2e Sandbox game, I managed to TPK the party with a trio of ghouls. The party consisted of A 2nd level mage, a 2nd level fighter, a 1st level fighter, and a hatchling copper dragon(using modified Council of Wyrms rules to allow one of the players who on average loses 1 character every session to play the dragon from an egg the party found). With many players being new to gaming, or returning from decades long hiatus, I've been trying not to be too tough on them.
Anyway, the game started well enough, picking up from the time before where the party was attempting to rescue the mage's henchman by fixing a problem they may have caused for the locals. They easily found the ghouls, but when they moved to attack, the dice did not favor them. The Ghouls managed to murder the party in less than 5 rounds. So, less than 1/2 an hour into the session, we had a TPK.
The group created new characters and tried again . . . for another TPK. It's a darn good thing that character creation doesn't take too much time. It soon became apparent that the players were becoming frustrated and they didn't want to admit defeat to "three lowly ghouls".
That's when I, as DM, decided to give the players a break. I don't like doing it, but trying to create new characters for a whole party mid-session is no fun at all. It's always half-assed, and the players don't have enough time to really think about or get into the idea of the character. When you combine that with the players' desire to get vengeance for characters they actually loved, then it starts being a slog for everyone.
Instead of all this, I decided to let the players use the characters they had started the session with, letting them use what the plan they had not considered until it was too late. The session was effectively reset, and though the encounter was dangerous, the party prevailed. We called it a night after that, and I warned the group that this was a once a campaign event. Next time, the deaths would stand for keeps.
I'll admit, as a DM who prefers to let the corpses fall where they may(I'm not a killer DM, but given the low level nature of the campaign at the moment, I'm sure a few people might beg to differ), giving the players a "do over" makes me feel more than a little dirty, but all in all, I feel I made a good call.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-61680774384374430722011-11-24T00:10:00.000-05:002011-11-24T00:10:19.461-05:00Death Knight KitThis was created in response to a post on Dragonsfoot.

Death Knight(Fighters Only)
Becoming a death knight is first and foremost a punishment for crimes that place a powerful knight forever beyond the codes of honor he once held. The character is completely and utterly beyond any hope of redemption, having committed crimes so heinous that even the rest of the grave is denied the character.
Requirements: A Death Knight is ALWAYS of Evil Alignment. While the vast majority are of Chaotic Evil Alignment, a significant number are Neutral Evil. Because of their betrayal of their ideals, it's completely unheard of for their to be a Lawful Evil Death Knight, though that's not to say it could not occur. The character must also have a Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma score of at least 9. The original character must have also been Human, as the curse is one lain down by human gods.
Modifications: Death Knights use the Ranger/Paladin advancement table and are unable to specialize in weapons. If a character takes this kit after first level, he is reduced/raised to the minimum required XP for his current level according to his new XP table. A death knight gains no bonus hp for having a high constitution. Nor does he gain bonuses to attack rolls or AC from a high dexterity. Because of the nature of his undead state, he gains a +1 bonus to his Strength Score, to a maximum of 18/00.
Weapons and Armor: Death Knights are unusually restricted compared to other warriors. A Death Knight with Strength high enough to grant him bonuses to attack and damage only gets to apply these bonuses when using Long, Two Handed, or Short swords. Because of his magical nature, he also only benefits from the magical effects of magical swords. For Armor, a Death Knight is limited to the armor he was wearing when he was first turned. Regardless of said Armor's AC, his AC starts out as the AC of the Armor or AC 0(whichever is worse). Not even magic items may change this.
Equipment: See Weapons and Armor. Beyond this, a Death Knight may own any equipment he wishes.
Nonweapon Proficiencies: Bonus: Ancient History, Etiquette, or Heraldry. Recommended: Any General, Warrior, or Priest Proficiency.
Special Benefits: When a Death Knight is first created he becomes an undead creature. At this point, he's not much better than the standard corporeal undead save that he uses the warrior chart for Hit Dice/Points, and he has a 10% resistance to magic, with a 1% chance to cause the spell to reflect back upon the caster. Because of the nature of the curse, though a starting Death Knight can be turned, he is unable to be destroyed by turning. In addition, the character gains the following benefits as he levels:

+10% Magic Resistance per level(to a max of 75%), 2% chance of spell reflection per level(to a max of 11%)

+1(+10%) bonus to strength score at each level to a maximum of 18/00 Strength.

At 4th level, the character begins to command undead as a 1st level evil priest. This ability increases as he levels.

At 5th level, the character generates a constant fear effect in a 5' radius

At 7th level, the Death Knight is able to either build or take over a keep of his very own in a manner similar to a fighter. Unlike that of a standard fighter, such a stronghold becomes a haven of corruption and decay, and very little is capable of surviving near such a monument to death. By gaining a Stronghold, the Death Knight gains access to the following abilities:

7th level: Immunity to turning.

8th level: Able to cast Detect Magic and Detect Invisibility at will. Able to cast Power Word, Blind, Dispel Magic, and Symbol of Fear once per day. All spells are at 10th level ability. These abilities show up not at level, but at each new or full moon(DM's choice) in which the Death Knight spends in his stronghold.

9th level: Able to cast Detect Magic, Detect Invisibility, and Wall of Ice at will. Able to Cast Dispel Magic twice per day. Able to cast Power word: Blind, Kill, OR Stun once per day. Able to cast Symbol of Fear OR Pain once per day. Able to cast a 20-die fireball once per day. These spells replace the 8th level spell abilities. All spells are cast at 20th level ability. They show up in the same manner as the 8th level ones.

9th level: The Death Knight's Strength is now 18/00(if it wasn't already)

Additionally, a death knight is not subject to the ravages of time. He suffers no ill effects from aging, but does gain the benefits. He also receives an additional +1 bonus to Intelligence for every 100 years of unlife(up to racial maximum).
Special Penalties: The big penalty to being a death knight is being a cursed form of the undead. Because of this, the starting death knight is Turnable by good/neutral priests, and controllable by evil ones until such time as the Death Knight gains some form of Stronghold. In addition to this, a Holy Word spell can unmake the creature entirely. This is the only way to permanently destroy a death knight.
Because of his undead state, there are two major combat flaws to being a Death Knight. The first is that the Death Knight is unable to heal naturally, and must rely on special spells or items to heal himself. The second is that, even if the death at -10 hp rule is used, being undead, the Death Knight "dies" at 0 hp. Unlike the standard undead however, the death knight doesn't stay dead forever, but will rise again in an age so distant it might as well be dead forever.
Any Death Knight with spellcasting ability must enter an inactive state(not really sleep, but it's a period where he suffers the same effects of sleep) for a period of no less than 8 hours in order to regain his spell like abilities.
In addition to those penalties already listed, each and every death knight is a unique being who came by his status via a curse. The DM should tailor the curse to each individual death knight. Some examples of additional curse effects include:

Being tormented nightly by the souls of those who died as a result of the Death Knight's action that caused him to become a death knight in the first place.

Being forced to break free from a prison of brambles/ice each time the character "awakens"

The character shifts every night of the full/new moon into the ethereal plane where he must fight for his own survival against a horde of ravenous undead that he is unable to control.

Death Knights who Fall after 1st level: A character who becomes a Death Knight after first level starts off with his normal abilities for his level as a standard warrior, and the abilities of a 1st level Death Knight. For each month that passes(on the night of the Full/new moon perhaps), he gains an additional level of abilities up to his current level. In the case of Fallen Paladins/Rangers, convert the character to a fighter first(standard fall from his original class) and THEN adjust as appropriate for the Death Knight Kit.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-88307329248460320122011-10-24T00:29:00.000-04:002011-10-24T00:29:20.531-04:00Life in Midlands, Part 2: WinterFog Month(28 days, 4 weeks, Similar to November, Full Moon on the 7th)
In cold years the first snows will start during this month. The colors of fall turn into the bleak grayness of winter. At this point most farmers are busy tending to their livestock, fattening them up in preparation for next month's slaughter.
Ankhegs and Wyverns wrap up breeding season, while creatures that do hibernate begin to do so(Ankhegs, Many giant animals of the reptilian and amphibian variety). Goblinoids are finished raiding by the 7th, as the remaining tribe members focus on filling winter stores. Ogre, Troll, Lizard man, Minotaur, and most giant raids that were common during the warmer months begin to taper off as these races begin to gather in their winter grounds.

Holy Month(28 days, 4 weeks, Similar to December, Full moon on the 7th)
By this point, livestock begins having some trouble finding enough food, so those involved with them slaughter many during this period. The colder temperatures. Salt is a very expensive commodity at this time of year as pickling and salting becomes a major industry in agrarian communities(which is basically everyone in the midlands). For the religious, this is also a time to leave offerings for the the Divinates(the Imperial religions' gods)
Since prey is becoming scarce, Goblinoids may raid, but like the Ogres and Trolls, they too become less active during this time. What little the tribes do often involves expanding the lairs, and do not bother to send scouts outside the lair(many prefer to seal the entrances to prevent others from entering during this time).
There are of course, a few races that become more aggressive during this time of the year. Wolf attacks tend to become more common during this time(the wolves are usually after the remaining livestock which they see as easier prey). Gnolls also become more active. Without the smaller goblinoids to raid, and with the larger races being a bit sluggish, the Gnolls' natural aggression and hunger forces them to clash with human settlements they'd normally ignore due to strong defenses.

God Festival(7 days, 1 week, Solstice/Yule/New Years/Candlemas/Einherjer, Full Moon on the 7th)
For those who are a part of the Imperial church, this is seen as the most important festival week. It's a time to say farewell to those who died over the course of the preceding year. Candles are lit in the homes of everyone who has lost friends or family, and a small cup of alcohol is left on each mantle for each of the departed. Church services are held each day until the last, and on the day of the 7th, there's a huge party to say farewell to previous year and welcome in the new.

Ice Month(28 days, 4 weeks, Similar to January, Full Moon on the 28th)
This is the time of year when tools and rope are made and repaired for the coming year. It's generally too cold to do much out of doors, and most people prefer not to leave their hearths. Gnolls are still a problem, as are some of the less prepared goblinoid tribes. In addition to those humanoids, settlements that were unable to stockpile enough food may turn to raiding other settlements to supplement their stores. One is generally advised not to be a traveler during this month.
This is the month when winter is in its full power, and during the coldest winters monsters native to colder climes become an issue(Frost Giant raiders, young White Dragons, winter wolves, etc) as they sometimes stray south from the Northlands, or come down from their hidden fortresses on the highest peaks.2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7602032324666783383.post-53673584240640167332011-10-23T13:46:00.000-04:002011-10-23T13:46:40.451-04:00In defense of character backgrounds A lot of bloggers have been talking trash about character backgrounds and deriding them lately. While I do agree that they are not 100% needed, they are an incredibly helpful tool for the DM of a sandbox game.
Now, when I'm talking about backgrounds, I'm not talking about the rocks your character has tripped over as a small child, I'm talking about his relationships; his still living family, friends, mentors, and rivals from the days before when he went out to go adventuring.
Think about all the times your players didn't all make it to the game some nights. You could of course just gloss over and pretend the player doesn't exist for the duration of the session, no harm done, or you could mention that a messenger arrived letting the character know something had happened to a family member, and he's needed at home. If your group is on a different plane from home, or too far for the character to travel reasonably within a single session, then possibly a friend or rival made it to where the players were staying and the PC decided that instead of going out adventuring.
Background usefulness doesn't end there. A low level party looking for a henchman instead of a hireling suddenly has an entire roster of people to pick as Henchmen. Those players with living relatives and friends also have a place where they may be able to hide out(even if they have to endure listening to embarrassing stories of their childhood) to recuperate. It's a great place to store wealth in settings that don't have banks, and a useful tool for the DM to provide plot hooks that don't involve a bleedin' inn!2eDMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09562222394843621495noreply@blogger.com4
